The thesis considers the value of socio-cultural aspects and the achievements of cultural-commercial aspects of SamulNori through an analysis of musical works and the changing natures of performance styles during the last 30 years.
SamulNori began as a performance group. But SamulNori expanded into being known as the prime representative of the traditional performance style of South Korea (samulnori) and was spread far and wide. Consequently, the achievement of the cultural-commercial aspects of SamulNori can be seen in three aspects : competitive power as a performing product ; basic role for new cultural contents ; fadeaway of the traditional culture and continuation of new public culture.
The thesis rearranged concepts of SamulNori and evaluated several situations and backgrounds for creating periodizations of SamulNori as a starting point. Up to now, the concepts of SamulNori were mainly explained in limited music-style, namely, as a new stage-style ? performing the Pungmul Jangdan seated ? discussing the beginning period of SamulNori without concerning the fact that the meaning of SamulNori has changed through time. Considering the role and meaning of SamulNori as public-culture and living-culture, not as a sole possession of professional artists, rearrangement in a broad sense that SamulNori is executing all kinds of performance and play of traditional Jangdan, must be preceded. It is very important for explaining the justification of SamulNori?s birth and musical-cultural goals, by looking into the conditions of the times that traditional cultures were faced with in 1978 when SamulNori was established at the small theater in the Gonggan Sarang.
And the backgrounds of the main characters of SamulNori not only confirmed the relationship with Pungmul and Namsadang nori where SamulNori was rooted, but also explained the continuing motivation of SamulNori as a professional artist group.
The facts were confirmed that records of performers and contents of the performances during the period from February 1978 to 1980 were not only a little different by reference books, but also the wrong records were repeatedly quoted. The author rearranged several early period records chronologically and corrected mistakes through interviews with related persons. The author collected materials while the author was working as a chief editor for the SamulNori 30th Anniversary. The author believes that arrangement of historical records is of utility for his study, but also of utility for future studies of SamulNori as an objective reference.
The historical development processes of SamulNori during the last 30 years were largely divided into three periods. The author looked into each period for concentrating strategic activities by increasing values as various musical achievements and cultural merchandise. The first period (1978?1983): the activity of this period was confirming time for possibility of traditional arts through SamulNori and excellent musical talents of Kim, Duk Soo and Kim, Yong Bae who were the original members of SamulNori. The second period (1984-1992): the activity of this period was arranged period for achieving quantitative expansion (popularize) and qualitative growth (successful overseas marketing). Lastly, the third period (1993 to present): the activity of the period is concentrated on global marketing, utilization of festival, and development of new contents as SamulNori activities for cultural businesses. Overall , the study of historical development processes of SamulNori is looking into meaning and processes of ? circumstantial continuation of the little tradition? by increasing competitive power and maintaining sustainment of traditional arts according to ever-changing cultural circumstances and public awareness for each period.
The results of SamulNori?s 30 years activities have influenced on our society and culture in various ways.
