This paper aims to examine and summarize the long writing career of Terry Eagleton. For this, four phases in him are named and analyzed: 'Marxist-empiricist,' 'Scientific,' 'Political' and 'Philosophical.' Among these, rather too much attention has been given to the impact of the third. Enormous success of Literary Theory helped to establish Eagleton's fame (or notoriety) as one of the pagans in English studies. But contrary to what his critics used to say, Eagleton never abandoned 'English' for politics nor replaced the aesthetic judgement with the political relevancy. Relationship between literary value and the historical vicissitude has always been Eagleton's main concern. According to the final chapter of Criticism and Ideology, relative reticence of Marxism about aesthetic value is due to the fact that the material conditions which would make such discourse possible do not yet exist. Any value judgement made today cannot but fall a prey to the degraded reality of capitalism. Hence only a ceaseless surpassing of the fixed and known historical values will make "the poetry of future" possible. Even so, such concepts as aesthetic value, literature, and tragedy should not be discarded since some meaningful hints for the future lie hidden underneath them. In this regard, Eagleton's changed attitude in his next ('political' and 'philosophical') works does not mean an abrupt break. Literary Theory: An Introduction, for example, can be read as a result of more deepened reflection on the status of aesthetic judgement. His proposal for 'rhetoric' as an alternative to literary studies is not so much a declaration of 'the end of English' as a strategic survival manual for today's radical literary academics. In Ideology of the Aesthetic, he explores the emergence of the philosophical concept of 'the aesthetic.' Though served with more philosophical flavor, his point is still how to revive the concept here and now. Sweet Violence represents the culmination of Eagleton's incessant struggle to appropriate the traditional concepts critical1y It argues tragedy can be good 'resources for hope' and attempts to restructure it on a renewed foundation.
