다산(茶山)의 신독론(愼獨論)에 나타난 신(神)의 중층적 이해: 귀신(鬼神)과 상제론(上帝論)을 중심으로 = Dasan’s Multi-layered Understanding of God of Heaven

This paper is aimed at analyzing how the Joseon Dynasty’s philosopher Cheong Yak-yong (pen name: Dasan) understands God of Heaven and how does it differ from the principles of Zhu Xi, a noted Song Dynasty (960-1279) Confucian scholar. This paper focuses much on the analysis of Jungyong Gangui (A Discussion of the Doctrine of the Mean) and Jungyong Jajam (Moral Lessons Drawn from the Doctrine of the Mean), two of Dasan’s major books based on his interpretations of Jungyong, or Zhongyong (The Doctrine of the Mean). Dasan understands the meaning of cheon-myeong (mandate of Heaven) in the same context of do (Tao) or dosim (Tao mind), gwisin (evil spirits or gods) and sangje (King of Heaven) - some of the major concepts of supernatural or superhuman existence in Oriental philosophy. While criticizing Zhu Xi, the leading figure of the School of Principle and the most influential rationalist neo-Confucian in China, Dasan seeks the concept of God in Jungyong that mentions “the superior man who is watchful over himself, when he is alone.” One of the foremost characteristics of Dasan’s view of God is that he focuses on the possibility of man’s existential encounter with God of Heaven unlike Zhu Xi who believes that the Great Ultimate is a rational principle, and discusses it as an intelligent and ordering will behind the universe.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

다산 정약용의 <中庸>에 관한 완숙한 해설서인 「中庸講義補」와 「中庸自箴」에는 ‘中和’, ‘中庸’의 개념 뿐 아니라 ‘天’, ‘天道’, ‘神’, ‘鬼神’, ‘上帝’ 에 대한 그의 독창적 철학이 정리되어 있다. 다산은 <中庸>의 ‘愼獨’론을 통하여 神에 관한 이해, 인간의 靈明한 본성, 인간과 神의 조우를 피력하였다. 또한 그의 신 이해는 때로는 귀신의 작용으로, 상제의 명령으로, 때로는 하늘의 도(天道)로 설명된다. 이 개념들이 중층적이고 다층적이어서 혼란을 주기도 하기만 다산이 목적한 것은 ‘하나의 神’이었다. 이러한 그의 神개념과 愼獨論은 자연히 朱子學과는 변별되는 것이었다. 그리고 무엇보다 중요한 것은 이 神 존재의 초점은 인간과의 만남에 있다는 것이다. 다산이 생각한 인간의 좌표는 전전긍긍하며 자신의 나약함을 시시각각 초극하며 이 神에게로 향하는 실존적 인간이다. 강림하는 신과 초극하는 인간의 만남, 이것이 바로 다산이 이해한 神이다.
