Many scholars have paid attention to the negative experiences in childhood and adolescence as the causes of the recently emerging social issue of Hikikomori Young adults. However, there is a significant lack of empirical research that utilizes quantitative data. This study aims to systematically examine the relationship between the occurrence of Hikikomori Young adults, negative experiences during childhood and adolescence, and depression through quantitative research methods. For this purpose, the study utilized data from the “2023 Seoul Survey on Isolated and Reclusive Young Adult,” conducting a logistic mediation analysis on 5,433 Young adults aged 19-39 in Seoul, South Korea.
The analysis revealed that negative experiences in childhood and adolescence influence the occurrence of hikikomori in Young adult through the mediation of depression. Based on these results, this study discussed the importance of preventive interventions for Young adult depression and the need for preventive measures during childhood and adolescence to mitigate the phenomenon of reclusion in Young adults and emphasized the necessity of managing depression in Hikikomori Young adults through the training of Hikikomori-specialized counselors.
