남아프리카공화국 버바텀 연극의 특수성 -핸드스프링 퍼펫 컴퍼니의 < 위비와 진실 위원회 >를 중심으로 = The Study on the Characteristics of South African Verbatim Theatre-Focusing on Handspring Puppet Company`s Ubu and the Truth Commission

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 남아프리카공화국을 대표하는 연극단체인 핸드스프링 퍼펫 컴퍼니(Handspring Puppet Company)의 < 위비와 진실 위원회(Ubu and the Truth Commission) >(1996)를 중심으로 남아공 버바텀 연극에 나타나는 특수성을 고찰해 보고자 한다. 1990년대 남아공에서는 거의 반세기 동안 흑인을 공식적으로 차별하고 억압했던 아파르트헤이트가 철폐되면서 과거사 진상규명을 위한 ``진실과 화해 위원회``가 발족했다. 위원회는 피해자의 이야기를 기록하고 진실을 밝혀내기 위해 수많은 청문회를 개최했고, 이것은 방송을 통해 전국에 생중계되었다. 이후 남아공 연극인들은 청문회의 이야기와 기록된 말들에 주목해 버바텀 연극을 적극적으로 수행하기에 이르렀는데, 이것은 소수 연극인의 특정한 작업방식에 국한된 것이 아닌 남아공 연극 전반에 나타난 하나의 연극적 움직임이었다. 남아공 버바텀 연극은 두 가지 측면에서 특별히 주목된다. 첫째, 남아공 버바텀 연극이 유럽의 버바텀 연극과 두드러지는 차이를 보이는 이유는 남아공의 독특한 역사적, 사회적, 문화적 경험에서 기인한다. 둘째, 유럽이나 미국의 버바텀 연극이 주로 실재를 포착하기 위해 버바텀 기법을 활용한다면, 남아공 버바텀 연극은 실재에 주목함과 동시에 의도적으로 허구적 연극성을 증폭시키는 경향이 있다. 본 논문은 남아공 버바텀 연극에 내재되어 있는 이러한 특수한 연극적 지점을 분석함으로써 그들이 궁극적으로 지향하는 가치가 무엇인지를 탐색해 보고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis aims to study on the characteristic of South African verbatim theatre with an example of Ubu and the Truth Commission(1996) of Handspring Puppet Company. As of 1990s when the apartheid was finally abolished, South Africa has launched the Truth and Reconciliation Committee to uncover the past affairs. What made the committee`s works most significant was to held a hearing which is open to the public and broadcasted in live all over the country. During that time, all the attention of citizens was targeted at what is testified and what is newly revealed through the hearings. It became the important theatrical environment because South African theatre practitioners actively attempted to create verbatim theatres based on the testimony and documents of the hearings since 1990s. It was not about someone`s individual practice, but considered as a sort of national theatrical movement. The verbatim theatre of South Africa attracts the attention from the two sides. First, it is very intimately related to historical, social, cultural context of South Africa. Second, it shows a different theatrical approach compared to other verbatim theatres such as in England, Europe, America and so on. While European and American verbatim theatre tend to apply verbatim method as a way of capturing the real, South African verbatim theatre is likely to emphasis fictional qualities in spite of leaning on verbatim method. Considering these aspects, I will study on how South African verbatim theatre is theatrically distinctive and what it ultimately goes to achieve.
