Libraries provide various information materials to users and have developed as a place where people can enjoy reading. In particular, a school library has done its best to organize spaces and provide services so that students can experience beneficial reading activities. Therefore, it is important to understand the spatial value and meaning of the school library.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the placeness of the school library on the reading experience of elementary school students. The subjects of this study are 4th to 6th graders attending an elementary school where a librarian teacher works. The research method is as follows.
First, a set of research hypotheses were developed through literature review. Next, the hypotheses were verified through questionnaire survey and statistical analysis, the effect of place attachment and place value perception, which are concepts derived from placeness, on elementary school students' reading experience was investigated. The statistical program used for the analysis was SPSS 26.0, and reliability analysis, factor analysis, frequency analysis, correlation analysis, simple regression analysis, and multiple regression analysis were performed.
The effect of the placeness of the school library on the reading experience of elementary school, which was identified through the study, is as follows.
First, the placeness of the school library has a positive(+) effect on the reading experience.
Second, the placeness of the school library has a significant effect on the perception of place value.
Third, the placeness of the school library has a significant effect on place attachment.
Fourth, place attachment has a positive(+) effect on reading experience.
Fifth, place value perception has a positive(+) effect on reading experience.
These results indicate that the placeness of the school library has a positive effect on the reading experience of students. Based on these results, the followings are suggested.
First, the space of the school library should be constructed considering physical, active, and emotional factors in a complex way.
Second, the school library should be operated so that students can recognize the value of the school library and have an attachment to the place.
Third, the school library should continuously provide opportunities for students to read in various forms.
This study has a limitation in that it surveyed only 4th-6th graders in elementary schools in a particular area, Jeonju city.
