Great East Japan Earthquake is said to be the most disastrous one on record. How to handle waste from the disaster varies to a large extent among local governments as each of them is in its own circumstances differently from others. The Japanese government enforced the special measure law to clarify the roles of itself but there are many problems to cope with in processing and recycling the waste from the disaster in these local government areas properly based on such law in the same, smooth and speedy way. This paper, based on the waste handling policy, reports on the current actual conditions of waste from the earthquake disaster this time and indicates problems to be tackled by the local administration for the most appropriate handling and recycling in Miyagi Prefecture.
