Cheongju Donglim-fortress and Bastion
Kang, Min-sig·Jo, Rok-ju
Cheongju Donglim fortress is a stone-built fortress in the form of
Samobong(Samtaegi), and its circumference measures 954.6m
around. This is considerably large in size for a fortress found in
the Baekje region, so it seems to have functioned as a base fortress
in this area. Meanwhile, this fortress is generally understood as a
stone-built structure, and its remains have two types of masonry.
The remaining part of the south-west wall shows that the wall
was built by laying out square and rectangular stones alternately
and seamlessly. Based on this finding, the fortress appears to be a
stone-built fortress of Baekje. Although the relics collected inside
the fortress were only pieces of roof tiles and earthenware, they
generally seemed to be those of the late Baekje. In this respect,
Donglim fortress can be understood as a base fortress which was
responsible for the defense of the outskirts of the castle during the
late Baekje period.
In addition, a bastion newly found in the west of Donglim
fortress was studied. The bastion is a stone-built fortress with the
circumference of 364m and was classified as Samonong in its form.
Although the original structure of the bastion has not survived, its
ruins (traces) exposed during the construction of hiking trails were
similar to those of Bumo-fortress 1 bastion. This bastion of
Donglim fortress was built to provide clear visibility and to protect
the outside of Donglim fortress. This manner of fortress
arrangement, which has the parent fortress and a bastion, is one
form of the fortress arrangements of Baekje and is also found in
nearby Bumo fortress as well in Daejeon and Okcheon areas.
Donglim fortress and its bastion are noteworthy with respect to
the operating time of Baekje’s stone-built fortress. However, if not
preceded by detailed research such as surface survey and
excavation, this view is inconclusive. At this point, I propose a
scrutinized survey and hope this is an opportunity to find Baekje’s
line of defense or the type of Baekje’s stone-built fortress.
