This thesis is the research of the children’s novels written in 1950s-1960s by Ma, Hae-Song, one of the most important writers in 1960s as well as who is considered one of the Christians who represented Catholicism, in terms of the relationship with Catholic church and its tradition.
Ma, Hae-Song, even before entering into the Catholic and writing the novel 『Angrike』 in 1950s-1960s, has loosely bound the Catholicism with the anticommunism and after he entered into the Catholic and writing 『모래알 고금』, he revealed it more obviously.
The anticommunism he showed in 『Angrike』 and 『Sand Go-Geum』 was very similar with the ideology that Korean Catholic church presented at that time. Ma, Hae-Song accepted the standpoint of the Korean Catholic church, and insisted it more clearly in his Children’s novels.
In the work of later period, Ma, Hae-Song basically took the same point of view of the anticommunism that the government of Lee, Seung-man claimed. However, as expressed in 『Sand Go-Geum』, he transparently described the anomic society and the children who suffered from it, and also criticised the political corruption of the government as the reason of all. It was the same procedure with the Korean Catholic church to take a cooperative relationship with the government based on the anticommunism firstly, and then to oppose it later.
The Catholic faith in Ma, Hae-Song’s children novels of the later period revealed in a different aspect; it was related more personal ethics when just entered into the Catholic, but it was expanded to the social participation. It is because Ma, Hae-Song has kept the criticism from the time of Japanese colonization and also based on the sincere Catholic faith. He was also aware of the standpoint of the Catholic church at that time.
