봉은사 역사문화콘텐츠 기획 및 활용 방안 = Planning and Utilization for the Historic and Cultural Content of the Bongeunsa(奉恩寺)

This study set out to have contemplation over the ways to develop and utilize cultural content based on the Bongeunsa(奉恩寺) of Korean Buddhism and the figures and events related to Buddhism for the defense of the country. While Buddhism for the defense of the country is an axis of understanding Korean Buddhism, the Bongeunsa was the principal Buddhist temple of Seonjong(禪宗) in Joseon and the base of Buddhist revival where Bowoo(普雨, 1509~1565) was active. The Seunggwa(僧科) of Seonjong took place here by him. Hyujeong(休靜, 1520~1604) passed the exam first and was followed by Yujeong(惟政, 1544~1610). They each served as a chief priest of the temple and protected the country as monk soldiers during Imjinwaeran(壬辰倭亂).
The investigator shed light onto the achievements of Bowoo(普雨), Seosan(西山), and Samyeong(四溟) that made the Bongeunsa as the shrine of Buddhism for the defense of the country and proposed ways to develop and utilize cultural content based on various materials related to them. The study further focused on the values of places where historic events took place and historic figures were active in the history of Korean Buddhism from the perspectives of the generosity of Buddhism for the defense of the country, central point of cultural exchanges, and ground for the salvation of people.
The study examined an aspect of religious culture in the nation through the Bongeunsa by making active use of historic and cultural content. The Bongeunsa holds the practice and mercy of patriotic spirit to guard the generosity and Dharmadhatu(法界) of Buddhism through high priests including Bowoo, Seosan, and Samyeong and their sacrifice and devotion. The historic and cultural content of the temple and Buddhism for the defense of the country will provide clues to contribute to the understanding and promotion of religious culture in the nation.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논의는 한국불교의 봉은사와 호국불교 관련 인물들과 사건을 문화콘텐츠로 개발하고 활용하는 방안을 고민하였다. 호국불교는 한국불교를 이해하는 한 축이며, 봉은사(奉恩寺)는 조선시대 선종의 수사찰로 불교중흥의 터전이다. 보우가 이곳에서 선종 승과를 열었고, 휴정이 첫 번째로 급제하고, 유정도 급제하여 각각 봉은사 주지를 맡았다. 이들은 임진왜란 때 승병으로 나라를 지켰다. 논자는 봉은사를 호국불교의 성지로 이끌어낸 보우, 서산, 사명의 업적을 조명하고 그와 관련한 다양한 자료들을 근거로 문화콘텐츠로 개발하고 이를 활용하는 방안을 제안하였다. 나아가 한국불교의 역사적인 사건과 인물들의 활동했던 공간에 담긴 가치를 호국불교의 도량과 문화교류의 중심지 및 중생구제의 터전이라는 관점에 주목하였다. 역사문화콘텐츠의 적극적인 활용을 통해 한국 종교문화의 한 단면을 봉은사를 통해 살펴볼 수 있다. 봉은사는 보우, 서산, 사명과 같은 고승, 특히 희생과 헌신을 통해 도량과 법계를 지키려했던 호국정신의 실천과 자비심을 간직한 곳이다. 봉은사와 호국불교 역사문화콘텐츠를 활용하여 한국 종교문화의 이해와 증진에 이바지 할 수 있는 단초를 제공하는데 이바지 할 수 있다.
