Submaxillary glands are the principal salivary glands which are innervated by
sympathetic form cervical sympathetic and parasympathetic from chorda tympani.
Since Ludwigs original report (1851) that electrical stimulation of the chorda tympani provoked in a few seconds abundant salivary secretion of the submaxillary
gland, the stimulation of this nerve has been widely performed on the experimental studies of the salivary secretion and collection of saliva for its chemical analysis.
As Gill (1960) indicated previously that salivary secretion varies greatly according to species, narcotic state, narcotics applied and nature of electrical stimulus, the author performed this experiment to investigate the most effective electrical stimulus of the chorda tympani upon ,the salivary response of the submaxillary gland in cat under stage III plane II of narcotic state by Godman and Gilman.
The results obtained were as follows:
L The most effective electrical stimulus of the chorda tympani was 10-20 c. /sec., 4-6volts and I MSEC duration by the square wave.
2. Reflectory secretion by gustatory stimulus was not provoked when narcosis
was deeper than stage II.
3). The stimulation of one side of the chorda tympani was ineffective for the salivary secretion of the opposite submaxillary gland. 4). Single stimulus of chorda tympani could not provoke salivary secretion.
