The purpose of this paper is an attempt to determine the characteristics and meaning of ci(詞) works written by KimHyu. Although there were many ci works of the scenic views using Musanildanun(巫山一段雲), the tune of cipai (詞牌) in the early Joseon Dynasty, the difficult rules of versification placed ci outside the mainstream of literature genre throughout the Joseon Dynasty. Writing ci works needs the knowledge of chinese phonology, many writers of poetry in Joseon lost confidence in writing or muttered complaints about their difficulty as the non-chinese speaker. It is remarkable that KimHyu wrote many ci works moreover used the various cipai even though he never met chinese envoys and had no opportunity to write ci works for them,
This paper pointed out the salient features of his ci works. One is that he made use of the various cipai, we can not find the similar examples in the others`s works easily. The other is that he dealt mainly with the sadness and grief of a deserted woman in the boudoir, contrary to the trend that ci works had various sources like poetry during the early Joseon Dynasty. Writing ci works was his form of emotional outlet, because the records of him said that he was dissatisfied with the political climate of that time. The features of his works explain that he accepted the types that are graceful and restrained(婉約詞), on the other hand, other writers wrote the types that are bold and unconstrained(豪放詞) under the influence of SuShi(蘇軾) before.
