The foundation of the present educational process in the United States was establised in the early 1930's. In 1933 the Board (ASCP) announced that one year of college study in addition to clinical experience would be prerequisites for application for the medical technology certifying examination.
Through the years the clinical laboratory became more scientifically complex, and it became necessary for students to complete more university courses.
The majority of colleges and universities design the medical technology curriculum so that a student can complete the pre-clinical educational requirements within a period of three years.
After successfully completing preclinical university courses, the student matriculates to the clinical portion of the total program. These programs provide one year of structured professional instruction for which the student earns academic credit from the university. Usually the clinical facility is a university-affiliated hospital that offers a curriculum including all major areas commonly offered in mordern clinical services.
After completing the four years of combined academic and clinical education, the student receives a baccalaureate degree and becomes eligible for certifying examination.
