In 2000, BBC requested Simon Schama, an art historian at Columbia University, to produce an documentary on British history. TV program ‘A History of Britain' was made of 15 parts, which were very popular among British television viewers. After being televised, it was published as three volumed book, A History of Britain, and it also became the center of public interest.
It seems that Schama became interested in television history after he had recognized the change of the existing paradigm from written languages to visual languages at the present time. ‘A History of Britain’ was successful from the viewpoint that many British viewers were interested in it. It passed over a century since movies had been produced by modern technologies. We now see the first real author of the type of histriophoty. In Schama's television history, his PTCs are simple, and they convey some metaphors and a poetic narrative to us. He writes some poetic images in that documentary.
Here, what is his intention inherent in the process of the production of ‘A History of Britain'? He makes British educated viewers an object of the documentary. He tried to read a poetic narrative on British history. It seems that this narrative made a deep impression on the educated viewers who had already known British history well. But his success is only limited to the formation of the very selected and condensed historical knowledge. This is also the reason why his book A History of Britain was unnoticed among academic scholars in comparison with the success of the historical documentary.
