해외직접투자의 위협효과 -한국 제조업을 중심으로- = The Threat Effect of Foreign Direct Investment: The Case of Korean Manufactures

This paper explores the impact of the threat effect of foreign direct investment on labor bargaining in Korea. The term threat effect refers to the use of implicit or explicit threat, by employers, of relocating all or part of their production to a different location; even if they don`t actually intend to. In this paper, I construct a unique industry level panel data set and show that the industry wage premium has been negatively associated with the level of outward Foreign Direct Investment in Korean Manufacturing sector for the period of 1993-2005. The industry wage premium is chosen as the dependent variable to test the hypothesis that increased capital mobility changes the nature of bargaining relationship between wokers and employers as predicted in the threat effect theory. The result show that the FDI level is negatively associated with industrial premia. Furthermore, the size of the effect becomes larger as the sample is limited on less-skilled wokers and non-unionized workers.
