This study aimed to develop an instruction model for children to grasp the basic concept of Jeong-ga based on a generative approach to music learning.
The study consisted of background research, development of preliminary model, extracting learning element and scheming out learning strategy, development of final model, embodiment of this model at a class level with planning specific teaching and learning procedure and suggesting whole set of teaching and learning program as an example. The model developed in this research more specified constructive learning model in teaching-learning activity section. It divided it into five subsections, which were contents, concept, musical activity, modes of knowledge representation, cognitive process, teaching and learning strategy.
To extracting learning elements, The musical nature of Jeong-ga, the definition of generative approach to music learning, the national statutory music curriculum in 2009 were carefully examined. The extracted elements categorized into timbre, Jangdan which means rhythm pattern, melody, form, expression, style. Sub-genre of Jeong-ga, Gagok, Gasa, Sijo showed similarities and differences in this categories. On every category, related learning activity examples from textbook for middle school were attached.
The sample teaching and learning program suggested in this research was designed for four weeks. Since there is difference in the level of difficulty in sub-genre of Jeong-ga, students were supposed to learn Sijo–Gagok-Gasa in turns. In case of Gasa, the learning contents was limited to be covered because it was too complicated for middle school students to learn.
In compliance with learning hierarchy, distinguishable elements were followed by concepts of the musical whole and so did modes of knowledge representation, cognitive process. To fully cover several concepts of one song, the block-time system which has been introduced in middle school should be applied. With this program, students would be able to have various musical experience with Jeong-ga and make their own concept of it, which lead them to improve understanding of Jeong-ga. It is expected that the results of this research could be useful resource for elaborating teaching and learning method for Jeong-ga and other genre of Korean traditional music.
