태블릿 PC에 적용된 어플리케이션 아이콘의 기호학적 의미작용 연구 - iPad 앱을 중심으로-

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 태블릿 PC에서 활용되는 어플리케이션 아이콘을 분석 대상으로 설정하여 기호학적 관점에서 유형화한 뒤 콘텐츠의 성격에 따른 아이콘 디자인의 표현 양식을 고찰함으로써 그 것의 효율적이며 합리적인 디자인 방법론을 규명하고자 하였다. 그에 따라 애플 앱 스토어의 어플리케이션을 연구대상으로 선정하여 퍼스 기호학의 세 가지 유형과 함께 융합 기호를 추가하여 내용분석 함과 아울러 전문가 심층인터뷰를 통해 도출된 데이터를 종합적으로 분석하였다. 그 결과, 현재 활발하게 사용되고 있는 어플리케이션 아이콘의 표현 형태는 상징 아이콘 (37%), 융합 아이콘(23%), 지표 아이콘(21%), 도상 아이콘(19%)의 순으로 나타났다. 또한 표현 대상과의 유사성 및 상관관계가 적거나 없는 도형을 사용자(User)들과의 일방적 약속을 담보하는 방식으로 강제하는 상징 아이콘의 표현 형태와 함께 아이콘의 설명 기능을 보다 더 명확히 부각시키기 위해 텍스트와 이미지를 함께 접목하는 융합 아이콘이 전체 표현 형태에서 60%를 차지하여 인터랙션의 중요성이 한층 강조 되고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 태블릿 PC의 어플리케이션 아이콘 디자인에 있어서 기호학적 접근 방식은 결과물에 대한 당위성을 확보하기 위한 이론적 근거가 될 수 있다. 또한 그것의 메시지는 수용자에게 의미 해석을 통해 전달됨으로써 아이콘 디자인의 보편타당한 방법론으로 제시 될 수 있음이 확인되었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study uses the application icons used in tablet PCs as the objects of analysis, classifies their types from a semiotic perspective, and examines the styles of expression in the icon design by the nature of contents; by doing so, it aims to explain an efficient and rational design methodology in this regard. In research, this study selected the applications from Apple App Store as the study objects, analyzed their contents according to the three types in Peirce's semiotics together with an addition of a syncretic sign, and conducted in-depth interviews with experts. Data thus produced have been analyzed in a comprehensive manner. The results show that the forms of expression of application icons that are currently in the most active use are in the order of: symbolic(37%); syncretic (23%); index(21%); and iconic(19%) icons. Meanwhile, two icons account for 60% of total forms of expression: symbolic icons that force users to have a unilateral agreement with such figures that have no or very little similarity and correlation with the actual object of expression and syncretic icons that combine texts and images to highlight an explanatory function more clearly. This result shows that the importance of interaction is increasingly stressed. A semiotic approach toward the application icon design for table PCs can form a theoretical basis to secure the legitimacy of design outcomes. It has also been shown that their messages can be delivered to recipients through semantic interpretation and hence can be presented as a universally valid methodology of icon design.
