For the six column barley and wheat, the percentage of protein and the weight and the amount of carbohydrate enzyme per grain were measured. The experiment revealed the fact that the above quantities are slightly different for each grain depending on the vertical position of the grain in the ear. The principal results may be summarized as followes;
(1) The grains which have the maximum average weight are those taken from the middle portion of an ear.
(2) The Percentage of protein, unlike that for the two column barley, is small for the grain in the upper part of an ear and gradually increases as the position comes down.
(3) In regard to enzyme activity, it was found that the activity of Amylase increases in proportion to the percentage of protein, whereas the activity of Saccharase and of β-Glucosidase shows no such proportionality.
