『독립신문』의 서술전략 = Descriptive Strategy of Independent Newspapers

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The goal of this study is to reveal whether the editorials of the Independent Newspaper are narrative strategies that combine values between scholars and Western intellectuals, seeking ways to overcome related difficulties. Seo Jae-pil, who returned from the U.S., hurriedly published a newspaper to resolve an issue, identifying the issues facing Joseon as follows: the education of the people, the need for mutual communication between the government and the people, and the need for mutual communication between Joseon and foreign countries. Newspaper writing is public and intended to be shared with others. The “Independent Newspaper” editorial also describes traditional Confucianism from a negative perspective, including views on the traditional ruling order system, ideology, learning, and librarian Samgyeong. However, if you read the “Independence Newspaper” carefully, you can see that the Confucian values of Samgang Oryun are still reflected in the narrative strategy, although Confucianism and Chinese studies are portrayed negatively. The fact that Seo Jae-pil and Yoon Chi-ho internalized Confucian values before they were armed with Western knowledge is the basis for supporting this hypothesis. In sum, this study reveals that the narrative strategy of the “independent newspaper” thesis is a mixture of orientalism and Confucian values.
