볼테르의 비극에 나타난 관용의 담론 - 『알지르』과 『조로아스터교도들』을 중심으로 - = A Study on Voltaire’s Tragedy - Tolerance in Alzire and Les Guèbres -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

오늘날, 볼테르는 비극작가로서는 17세기 고전비극대가들만큼 평가받지 못하고 있지만, 이 작가들과는 달리, 유럽 곳곳을 다니고 더 넓어진 세상을 경험한, 그리고 또 누구보다 적극적으로 자신이 속한 사회현실의 문제점을 비판한 행동파 지식인 극작가이다.
유명한 『관용론』을 집필한 이 계몽사상가의 사상을 그의 두 비극작품, 『알지르 혹은 아메리카인들』과 『조로아스터교도들 혹은 관용』에서 읽어 본다. 『알지르』에서는 유럽 기독교 정복자들과 신대륙 원주민들 간 충돌을, 『조로아스터교도들』에서는 로마제국 내 종교와 풍속의 충돌을 다루면서, 모든 사람들이 평화롭게 공존하는 방법으로, 관용을 제시한다.
두 비극에는 모두, 스스로는 강자의 진영에 속해 있으면서도, 강자의 폭력성을 고발하고 비난하면서 약자를 돕는 인물이 있다. 이들은 심지어 약자를 돕는 자신의 의지를 흔들 수 있는 사건들을 넘어서면서, 오로지 약자에 대한 관용 그 자체에만 집중한다.
볼테르는 『알지르』에서는 약자인 원주민의 관용도 부각시키고, 『조로아스터교도들』에서는 배척의 대상인 조로아스터교도의 관용도 부각시킨다. 또한 전자에서는 스페인 정복자들이, 그들이 믿는 기독교신의 덕성에 부응하지 못하는 행태를 통렬히 비판하고, 후자에서는 어느 종교를 믿든지 인간애가 있는 삶이 훌륭하다는 것을 강조한다.
볼테르는 비이성적인 광신과 박해행위를 배척한다. 『알지르』에서는 관용이 신의 은총을 받은 회심과 연결되어, 인간들의 노력이 빛을 잃지만, 『조로아스터교도들』에서는 인간의 이성적 판단이 돋보인다. 국가의 법과 질서가 우선임을 강조하며, 종교적 관용과 다양한 종교의 상호존중을 역설한다. 하지만 두 비극에서 나타난, 무조건적인 관용의 중요함도 간과할 수 없다. 이 또한 볼테르가 생각하는 관용이기 때문이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

As a tragedy writer, Voltaire is not estimated as fully as his predecessors of the seventeenth century. But different from these writers, he traveled several European countries and experienced more extended world. Above all, he observed the society he lived in and criticized its problems. He was an intelligent writer who showed his thoughts in his action.
We read the view of this Enlightenment thinker who wrote the famous Treatise on Tolerance (Traite sur la tolerance), in his tragedies, Alzire or the Americans (Alzire ou les Americains) and the Zoroastrians or the tolerance (Les Guebres ou la tolerance). Voltaire suggests the tolerance as a remedy for the conflict between European Christian conquerors and native Americans in Alzire, and for the religious conflict in Roman Empire in the Zoroastrians, as well.
In both tragedies, we find that the characters, belonging to the people with power, help the weak people. These characters blame the powerful people for their violence. Despite the circumstances which can diminish their willingness, they concentrate on their generous plan and show the tolerance.
In Alzire, a native American’s generosity toward his enemy is remarkable. And in the Zoroatrians, the hospitality offered by a pagan to a distressed stranger stands out. In the former, the dramatist criticizes the Spanish conquerors who do not fulfill the Christian virtue. In the latter, Voltaire insists the fact that the life in which one practices humanity counts, not the religion one believes in.
Voltaire rejects the fanaticism and the persecution. In Alzire, the Spanish governor’s generous decision, being related to the God’s grace, puts the human efforts in the shade. But in the Zoroastrians, the final decision depends on the human reason. The priority of the national law and the mutual respect amongst religions are underlined. But we cannot pass over the unconditional tolerance. This is also Voltaire’s opinion.
