The purpose of this study is to examine the degree of caregiving burden and gratification among Korean caregivers for demented older person, and to identify the factors buffering against the negative effects of caregiving stress. Data were collected through interviewing and mailing survey from 56 primary caregivers who were living with demented older person in the same household. The findings are 1) The severity of elder`s cognitive impairment and the amount of caring time per day were related to more caregiving burden, 2) Spousal support and the duration of elder`s impairment moderate the relationship between the impairment severity and caregiving burden, showing that increases in the degree of self-care impairment and increase in the degree of cognitive impairment, were related to decrease in caregiving burden among those with more spousal supports and among those having been dealing with the problem longer, respectively, 3) The caregivers who were children to demented elder generally perceived more caregiving gratification, but this positive perception decreased the degree of cognitive impairment increase, in comparison to spouses or children-in-law.
