한(恨)과 멜랑콜리 비교 연구 = Comparative Study of the Han(恨) and Melancholy Discourse

Currently we live in a `depressive society`. In order to understand our depression existing in this society, it is necessary to compare the traditional Han(恨) discourse and the melancholy discourse from the West. The purpose of this paper is to compare the melancholy and Han subtly, and philosophically to elucidate differences between them. Especially we will focus on two core concepts of Han-discourse, that is to say, (1) `relation` and (2) `Sak-im`(fermentation), with which we have dealt neglectfully. I will try to contrast the world view(Weltanschauung) of substance with that of relation and make Shin, Young-Bok`s and Pak, Dong-Hwan`s philosophy a stepping-stone towards our study. According to the theory of relation, the relationship is the primary principle that constitutes substances and it precedes substances. A few concepts i.e. `between`, `minority`, `the unfinished`, `periphery`, etc. are considered as important in the theory of relation. While the independence is stressed in the theory of substance, the interdependence is emphasized in the theory of relation. If all things are interdependent, they must have a `parasitic mode of being`. Melancholy is the mood of independent being(substance, individuality and subject), while Han is the basic mood of every life that can not escape from the parasitic lifestyle. Finally, I will take a closer look at the appropriate mechanism of Sak-im that differs with the work of mourning in melancholy discourse. Sak-im is a fermentation. Biologically, it is a working of invisible microbe. While the work of mourning is close to a spiritual sublimation of the individual, Sak-im is akin to the embodied sublimation which can take place only through the assistance of invisible others.
