시민의 덕 향상 프로젝트에 대한 비판적 평가 = A Critical Appraisal of the Enhancement Project of Civic Virtues

국문 초록 (Abstract)

인간 향상 프로젝트(human enhancement project)에 적극적인 관심을 보이는 트랜스휴머니스트(transhumanists)는 시민교육의 보완책으로서 새로운 기술의 활용을 촉구하는 획기적인 방안을 제시한다. 그들은 인간의 도덕 향상(moral enhancement)과 관련하여 교육의 역할을 과소평가했었던 이전의 관점에서 벗어나 시민교육과 결합하여 낮은 시민 참여와 정치 참여의 문제점을 해결하고 사회의 응집성을 높이는 데 도움을 주는 생의학적 기술의 개발 및 활용을 강조한다. 특히 그들은 시민의 덕 향상처럼 향상 기술이 향상의 수혜자인 개인만이 아니라 전체로서의 사회에 가져다주는 이득과 혜택에 초점을 맞춘다. 이에 이 논문에서는 최근 향상 논쟁의 최첨단에 해당하는 시민의 덕 향상 프로젝트를 비판적으로 분석하였다.

Transhumanists, who are actively interested in human enhancement project, suggest a groundbreaking method to encourage the use of new technologies as a complement to the conventional civic education. They emphasize the development and utilization of biomedical technologies that, in combination with civic education, help solve the problems of low civic engagement & political participation and enhance the cohesiveness of society, unlike their previous perspectives that had underestimated the role of education with regard to moral enhancement. In particular, as we can see in the case of improving civic virtues, they focus on the benefits that enhancement technologies bring to our society as a whole, not just individuals who are beneficiaries of the enhancement. Therefore, this article aims to critically analyze the enhancement project of civic virtues, which is the cutting edge of the recent enhancement debate.
