수행포교의 현황과 나아갈 방향 = The Propagation of Buddhism through Practice Program

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 원고는 수행포교의 의미와 가치, 그리고 수행포교의 역사와 현황, 이에 대한 종합적 진단과 전망과 나아갈 방향에 대한 내용이다. 수행은 부처님의 가르침에 입각해서 마음과 몸을 닦아 마음이 평화와 안정을 찾고 위없는 깨달음에 이르고자 하는 것이다. 수행포교는 부처님의 가르침에 근거한 여러 가지 수행을 통해 포교하는 것이다. 수행을 통해 사람들이 불교를 온 몸과 마음으로 받아들여 진정한 마음의 평화와 행복을 얻고, 궁극적으로 깨달음에 이르게 하는 것이 수행포교의 목적이다. 다시 말해서 수행포교란 주변의 많은 사람들에게 수행법을 가르치고 지도하는 가운데 마음의 안정과 평화를 심어줘 불교를 널리 알리고 전하며 깨우치게 하는 것이다. 수행포교는 교육포교, 문화포교, 조직포교, 복지포교, 계층포교 등 현대포교의 전방위적 영역에서 그 핵심을 점하고 있다. 때문에 수행포교의 영역은 점차 증대 되어 나갈 것이다. 아울러 현대는 전지구적으로 참살이와 명상의 붐을 타고 있는 수행의 시대인 만큼 수행 포교의 지평은 지속적으로 넓어져 갈 것이다. 우리나라에 다양한 수행법과 수행프로그램이 본격적으로 일어나기 시작한 것은 1980년대부터라고 생각된다. 그 결과 2000년대에 이르러 수행포교는 새로운 포교방법으로 대두되면서 포교의 새로운 장을 열게 되었다. 현재 진행되고 있는 수행법과 수행프로그램의 현황에 대해 종합적으로 진단해 보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 간화선 일변도의 수행에서 간경, 절, 주력, 위빠사나, 여러 가지 대승불교의 지관수행법, 자비명상을 비롯한 다양한 명상법으로 수행법이 다변화되고 있다. 둘째, 간화선은 주먹구구식으로 지도했던 이전과는 달리 체계적인 지도, 발심, 법문, 수행, 점검체계를 통해 신도들에게 가까이 다가가고 있다. 발심법문과 지도 법문으로 화두가 살아 있는 화두가 되어 마음의 중심에 자리잡게 된 것이다. 셋째, 여러 가지 수행법이 절충되어 전개되고 있다. 간화선과 기초 참선으로서 다양한 지관법의 절충, 간화선과 간경의 절충, 염불과 절, 호흡법의 절충, 간경과 주력이 절충되고, 기타 여러 가지 명상법과 전통적인 수행법이 절충되어 퓨전화 되어가고 있다. 넷째, 이제 수행에서 상담의 요소는 빼놓을 수 없는 중요한 요소로 등장하고 있다. 이러한 상담의 과정에서 내면의 고통을 치유하는 심리 치료는 물론 수행치료의 효과를 보이고 있다. 다섯째, 신도들을 대상으로 하는 수행법이나 프로그램은 궁극적 깨달음이 수행의 목표이긴 하겠지만 그보다도 평상시 마음의 자유와 진정한 휴식을 얻는 방향으로 전개되고 있다. 여섯째, 수행법 강좌나 수행 프로그램이 대학생을 비롯한 청년 불자 포교의 새로운 돌파구를 마련해 나가고 있다. 일곱째, 그러나 아직 수행체계와 수행프로그램이 자기 완결구조를 갖고 있지 못하며 전문화되지 못하고 있다. 아울러 수행법과 프로그램을 지도할 지도자가 절대적으로 부족한 상태이다. 이와 관련 앞으로 수행포교의 힘찬 장을 열어가려면 다음과 같은 과제를 해결해야 하리라고 본다. ① 현대적 의미의 수행 포교 방법론 및 다양한 수행 프로그램을 연구 개발해야 한다. 아울러 프로그램의 내용을 풍성히 하고 그 내용을 효과적으로 전달할 시청각 자료라든가 콘텐츠 개발도 시급하다. ② 수행 프로그램의 내용도 중요하지만, 더 중요한 점은 그 프로그램을 지도하는 사람의 스킬과 역량이다. 양질의 프로그램을 개발하는 것도 훌륭한 지도자를 양성할 때 가능하다. 한시 바삐 수행법 지도인력풀을 형성하고 이들을 활용하는 방안을 찾아야 한다. ③ 외부의 소음으로부터 방해를 받지 않고 마음 편히 수행할 수 있는 고요하고 정갈한 수행 공간의 확보는 수행프로그램 진행을 위해서 무엇보다도 먼저 우선시 되어야 할 조건이다. ④ 특화된 수행법 및 수행프로그램 전문 사찰을 조성해야 한다. 다른 사찰과 차별될 수 있는 전문화된 수행 영역이나 프로그램을 최소한 하나 정도 정립해 놓아야 세상과 사람들의 관심과 주목을 받을 수 있으며 그 수행법으로 지속적으로 발전시켜 나갈 수 있다. 이를 바탕으로 사찰 또한 성장할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper is a comprehensive examination and forecast on the meaning, value, history, and current circumstance of propagation of Buddhism through Buddhist practice. Buddhist practice is to train mind and body based on the Buddha`s teaching in order to obtain spiritual peace, happiness, and ultimately the enlightenment. The goal of propagation of Buddhism through practice is to teach the people the method of practice, and thus help them to obtain spiritual peace and happiness. Propagation of Buddhism through practice is the core of the various propagation methods of Buddhism in these days, such as propagations through education, cultural activities, social welfare, and class focused activities. We can expect that the domain of propagation of Buddhism through practice expands gradually. Also the booming of well-being and meditation are also positive aspects for the future of propagation of Buddhism through practice. It is since 1980s that various methods and programs of Buddhist practice began to appear in the Korean society. Therefore, in 2000s, propagation of Buddhism through practice became the most popular method of propagation and opened new phase in the field of Buddhist propagation. The Buddhist practice methods and programs in today are as follows: First, the practice method is being diversified with the various methods including Sutra reading, bowing practice, Manta chanting, Vipassana, various methods of mission ``Ji-Kwan`of Mahayana Buddhism. Hwadu Seon is not the only practice method anymore. Second, Hwadu Seon is also approached by much developed and systematic method with teaching, invoking of mind, dharma talk, spiritual practice, and evaluation system. It resolved the various problems in the initial stage. Hwadu as the dharma of spiritual awakening and the dharma of teaching became living Hwadu, and is able to occupy at the center of mind. Third, the various practice methods are compromised each other. Various meditations are fused with Hwadu Seon. There happened other fusions among the methods: Hwadu Seon and Sutra reading, chanting and bowing practice, Sutra reading and Mantra chanting. Fourth, counseling became one of the essential components in the various practice methods. Counseling takes effect a physical cure as well as cure of practice. Fifth, the methods and programs of practice for lay-people focuses on how they can obtain peaceful mind and spiritual rest in their ordinary life, even though they still aim the ultimate enlightenment. Sixth, class for practice method and program became a new breaking through method of college student propagation. Seventh, however, the system and program of practice are not fully developed and specialized. Besides, there is not enough number of instructors who can teach and lead the practice and programs. For the future of the propagation of Buddhism through practice, the following issues must be resolved. 1. Modernized practice method and programs must be developed. The development of audio-visual materials and contents is urgent for the effective education and transmitting of information, 2. Not only the content of program, but also the instructor`s skill and capability are more important, Development of good program is possible when good instructors are raised, We have to build instructor pool and find out how to utilize them, 3, The most basic need is quiet and clean space in which practitioners can practice without being disturbed by noise and other disturbances, 4. We have to build monasteries specialized for practice programs, we need to build at least one monastery differ from other monasteries, and draws popular attention with its practice and program, It could be also the strategy for the development of the monastery.
