In Korean dictionaries, ‘banjug’(‘반죽’) is defined as a polysemous word meaning both “dough made by kneading flour with water” and “a person’s shamelessness or social pliability.” Previous studies have explained that the idiomatic expression ‘banjug-i johda’(‘반죽이 좋다’)—meaning “to be easygoing and unashamed or unembarrassed”—originated from the semantic extension of the basic sense “well-kneaded, soft, and sticky dough” to describe a person’s character. However, this explanation is not easily convincing because of the considerable gap between the basic and extended meanings. This study argues instead that ‘banjug-i johda’(‘반죽이 좋다’) developed from ‘beonjug-i johda’(‘번죽이 좋다’), in which the first syllable ‘beon’(‘번’) was replaced by ‘ban’(‘반’) through phonological alternation. The phrase ‘beonjug-i johda’(‘번죽이 좋다’) derives from the root ‘beonjug’(‘번죽’) of the verb ‘beonjug-georida’(‘번죽거리다’, “to act in an annoyingly smirking or ingratiating manner”), inserted into the construction ‘X-ga johda’(‘X가 좋다’). Thus, the ‘banjug’(‘반죽’) in ‘banjug-i johda’(‘반죽이 좋다’) is distinct from the ‘banjug’(‘반죽’) meaning “flour dough,” and it is therefore appropriate for dictionaries to treat the two as homonyms rather than as senses of a single polysemous entry.
