언어에 대한 본능과 훈습의 관계 규정하기 = Defining the Relationship between Linguistic Instinct and Vasana

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper attempts to discuss the relationship between linguistic instinct and Vasana, focusing upon Buddhist texts. Dharmakirti`s mention of the intelligence of a newborn offers a number of implications. He addresses questions about human beings` very first contact with language, and the channel through which language is perceived and used. His work is a good explanation of the epistemological stance of language. The relationship between language and power concerns ``the structure where pure sense meets language in order to instantly gain power.`` The profoundness of language lies in its deep structure and its responsive vitality, as opposed to ordinary technical instruments. Pure sense moves from depth to surface, where linguistic instinct is molded through Vasana. One can see how the power of language is not in its use, but in its historicity and lofty structure. The learning of language is controlled by adults, a fact upon which Buddhism and many other disciplines in India agree. Buddhism, in general, does not regard language as positive. Despite the vigorous use of language throughout Buddhist texts, clinging to language itself is taboo and is a hurdle to enlightenment. Ironically, it is through prapanca that one learns about Buddhist enlightenment, but it is the desperate use of language that helps bring enlightenment.
