Grigorie is my denshtik-- my orderly-- and if there is a more homely-looking man in all the Russian Army I do not want to see him. When I write "homely" I write in the diminutive. Grigorie is not-- to use a common phrase-- an oil-painting. I can describe beauty with a certain amount of ease, because it is a pleasure to do so, but to describe Grigori is indeed difficult-- I hate to weigh his features one by one and find them wanting. Bad enough to know that the tout ensemble is unlovely; one hesitates to think of details. Still, you must see him as I do-- so here goes
