독일 통일 후 베를린 도심 장벽 터의 재생과 빈공간의 의미에 대하여 = The presentation of the voids and the urban renewal project in the Berlin Wall Area after German reunification

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The European City-Model originated from the Greek Polis, which contained agora, the square of life and the space of the thinking, where humanistic values have grown. But in the radicalization of modern industrial capitalization even the minimum empty space was occupied by capitalistic desire. Nowadays, the citizen is shorn of the rights to live in the city, as well as to live like a human being.
In this work I firstly paid attention to the close relation between empty space in the city and humanistic life and tried to explain the roll of the void in the city, especially in the example of the urban renewal project of the city center in Berlin. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification the urban space around the wall area had to be restructured according to the urban image-policy that was working with the concept of ‘Kritische Rekonstruktion’.
Some part of this areas has been reconstructed based on the historic urban landscape before World War II and simultaneously was filled with buildings that offer Berlin’s new identity. On the other hand, it is to decide not to fill some of the voids after the opinion of Berliner residents; for example, Bernauerstreet which symbolized the beginning and end of the Berliner division, is left as it is, and just remodelled as the memorial place and open exhibition space. In this empty space the history of the division is not forgotten and remembered again and again. As such Berlin can be reborn as the space of the thinking, as well as the European City-Model which contains humanistic values.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

유럽의 도시는 그 기원을 보자면 풍부한 인문학적 가치를 향유하는 모델을 보여주었다. 그리스의 폴리스는 사람들이 모이는 장소이자 사유하는 공간을 품고 있었다. 그러나현대의 산업사회가 급진적으로 발전하면서 사유를 위한 최소한의 공간마저도 상업주의와 자본주의적 욕망에 점유되고 인간다운 삶조차도 파괴되고 있다. 이 논문에서는 도시에서 인간적 삶과 공간 형성의 유기적 관계에 주목하면서, 유럽 도시에서 빈공간의 역할을 재해석하고자 하였다. 이런 시도는 우선 20세기 말 통일을 달성하면서 장벽 철폐후 도심 한가운데 생긴 거대한 빈공간을 재구성하는 베를린의 도심 재건 프로젝트의 예에서 밝혀질 것이다. 이 프로젝트의 이론적 틀로서 ‘비판적 재구성’이란 컨셉은 한편으로 유럽의 수도라는 이미지 정책에 따라 동-서베를린 도심을 재구성한다는 방향성을 보여주고 다른 한편으로는 이 빈공간을 역사로 채워야 한다고 제안하였다. 특히 베를린분단의 시작과 끝을 상징하는 베르나우어 거리의 1.4km에 걸쳐 분단 및 장벽 추모지가 조성되었는바, 이 빈공간에서 분단이라는 역사적 파편이 전시되고 과거의 사건을 기억하고 성찰하도록 만드는 것이다. 이와 같이 역사를 현재화하고 사유와 성찰의 계기로재생시킨 베를린의 도심 재건 프로젝트는 전 세계의 젊은 예술가와 학자들을 끌어들이는 힘으로 작용하고 있고, 이와 더불어 21세기 베를린은 유럽 도시의 기원을 상기시키면서 인문적 가치를 향유하는 도시 모델로서 거듭나고 있다.
