The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between epitaphs and the biographies of Goryeosa and the obituaries in Goryeosacheoryo. The connection between the three sources is not significant until the military regime. Epitaphs were created based on records handed down within the person's family. These records were rarely used in Goryeosa or Goryeosacheoryo. The compilers of Goryeosa and other sources primarily utilized official history books such as Goryeosilok.
Among the people with epitaphs, there are 42 people in total who are included in the biographies of Goryeosa (History of Goryeo) up to the military regime period. Of these, 9 people from the early Goryeo period and 12 people from the military regime period are included outside the biographies of Goryeosa (History of Goryeo). In addition, among the people from the early Goryeo period, there are 6 people without epitaphs, and 3 people without epitaphs from the military regime period. The compiler of Goryeosacheoryo attempted not to evaluate monks or royal relatives from a Neo-Confucian perspective.
During the military regime, in cases where a person was needed for biographies, etc., the biographies in Goryeosacheoryo were not written. As Goryeosacheoryo was a history book written in chronological order, the year of death had to be known in order to write the biographies.
The basic data for epitaphs were created by the person or their family. Comparing epitaphs with biographies, biographies are generally shorter. However, the differences in the biographies of officials stem from the compilation of biographies in the History of Goryeo, which summarized them. The biographies in epitaphs are more accurate than those in biographies.
The compiler of the biographies paid particular attention to evaluating the protagonists’ character and actions. This was intended to foster Confucian morality and instruct the bureaucracy. The compiler of the chronicles intended to leave behind moral lessons by integrating the characters, actions, and episodes he valued into the text.
