This paper is focused on Gijadaesangshin(祈子對象神:The object of worship to who women pray to have a son)-Maitreya(彌勒)(G-M). The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the faith in G-M is appeared in and transmitted to narrative literature in Korea.
The structure and results of the study are summarized as following.
Chapter Ⅱ:This chapter shows the Maitreya religion which was accepted by the public.
Chapter Ⅲ:This chapter involves investigation of the narrative literature transmission of G-M, which is classified into three parts, the myth of the original ancestor of the world, the mythical characrteristics of legends, the folkloric characteristics of legends. The results represent the facts that Maitreya played roles of the creator of human, the public Gijadaesangshin(G), the individual G. Thus, the character of Maitreya can be drawed out commonly as G, despite of different aspects according to the characteristics of genres.
Chapter Ⅳ:On the ground of the previous chapters, this chapter reveals the meaning of Maitreya in the history of narrative literature. As a result, the fact is that G-M plays a pivoltal role in the Maitreya religion.
