프랑스어권 서아프리카 소설 카마라 라이의 『검은 아이』 영화 각색 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 프랑스어권 서아프리카 소설인 카마라 라이의 『검은 아이, African child(영어), Enfant Noir(프랑스어)』의 영화 각색 연구를 통해 동일한 작품명을 공유하는 단일한 이야기가 소설과 영화에서 어떻게 차별되어 재현되는지 연구한다. 특히 동 작품의 각색이 원작에 대한 충실성 혹은 차별성 중 어느 부분에 중점을 두고 있는지에 대해 천착한다.
1953년 프랑스에서 발간된 『검은 아이』는 프랑스어권 서아프리카 소설을 대표하는 작품이며 현재까지 프랑스를 비롯한 서구에서 높은 인지도를 갖고 있다. 서아프리카 기니 출신 작가의 이 소설은 1995년 프랑스 감독 로랑 슈발리에에 의해 각색되어 영화로 제작되었다. 프랑스어권 서아프리카 문학 작품의 영화 각색은 서아프리카 작가의 작품 혹은 서구 작가의 작품을 서아프리카 감독이 각색 후 연출하는 방식으로 주로 이루어졌다. 이에 반해 『검은 아이』는 예외적으로 프랑스 감독이 서아프리카 작가의 소설 작품을 영화로 각색한 것이다. 로랑 슈발리에는 작품의 각색에서 극영화 요소보다는 다큐멘터리 영화요소를 적극적으로 사용한다. 그는 허구의 산물이자 작가의 상상력에 바탕을 둔 소설을 각색하면서 비전문배우의 기용, 미장센의 절제, 다큐멘터리 방식의 촬영 등 현실을 직접적으로 반영하는 다큐멘터리 영화 연출 방식을 선택한다. 특히 이야기의 기본 구조는 유지하면서도 사건의 재현에서는 중요 요소의 과감한 삭제와 제작 당시의 현실을 반영하는 새로운 요소의 삽입 등을 통해 원작에 대한 충실성보다는 자유로운 각색을 수행한다. 그가 선택한 자유로운 각색은 원작 소설을 대표하는 특징이며 작품 성공의 주요 요체인 어머니와 고향에 대한 노스탤지어와 서정성을 사라지게 만들었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper examines how a single story can be seen in both novel and movie by studying the adaptation of African Child by Camara Laye, one of representative works of West African French literature. We study different aspects of the adaptation of the work through the fidelity and the difference of the film produced through the process of the adaptation and the novel that is an independent work under the same title, African child.
Published in France in 1953, African child has been highly recognized in France and other western countries. In 1995, the work was adapted by French director, Laurent Chevallier. The style of Laurent Chevallier"s work was described as a feature-documentary film rather than a general feature film. Following the director’s preference, The African child was reproduced into a documentary style work directly reflecting the reality.
Instead of maintaining the originality of the novel, Chevallier’s autonomous adaptation has been achieved through the deletion and the insertion of different elements in the documentary shooting method and the work composition. Although the elements of his autonomous adaptation were very vivid throughout the film, he extracted his nostalgia for home and family that he considered as a fountain of his success in reality.
