      Reaching modern age, following the development of scientific civilization, the woodblock print including two factors of science and beauty contains the meaning of pluralistic art. Besides, woodblock print which can be granted its value as plural art of a field of independent, art, has been developed with speciality.
      The woodblock print got off from the limitation as the traditional duplicating techniques, and has great meaning as a field of independent art. The woodblock print appeared a long time ago, and it was originated by the necessity to produce a large number and same copies as the reproducing techniques, at first. The woodblock print in early age on the assumption itself of plurality like modern ones was not conceptive, but the necessity of reproduced articles became the motive power to enhance the development of woodblock print.
      The appearance of photography became the moment for the woodblock print to turn to pursue creative feature of peculiar woodblock print just like in other pictures, and the new materials and technology offered development on the technical aspect to the woodblock print.
      Many makers devoted themselves in woodblock print work, which can be understood that they found strong fascination which only woodblock print has. That is, because not only woodblock and paper are separated, but the peculiar atmosphere owned by the woodblock print together with diversity of techniques, it can solve difficulties which other medium can not solve.
      In spite that, we feel the limitation of expression in the woodblock print, because setting aside the difficulty of facilities required for the work different from other expressive medium, it can be said that the difficulty is due to indirect expression to pass the intermediate medium of woodblock compared with oil painting or water-color painting of direct expression, used as meaning of term of the expressed by the medium of woodblock, in spite of strong charm of the woodblock print, we face the technical problem of colors and rough drawing.
      Thus, compared with the woodblock print which is produced by manual work, the printing depending on the mechanical civilization can plan working efficiently in various aspects, and reaching modern age, the printing technology has highly developed together with the scientific civilization. And, by inducing such technical aspect of printing to the woodblock print, materials and techniques can be expanded freely.
      This thesis aimed to observe the speciality of the woodblock print techniques which has its value as a field of formative expression and materials and techniques following production of woodblock, and to study the technical aspect of printing, and to overcome the technical variety and limitation in the woodblock print.
      The method of study was, first of all, to consider the originated background of the woodblock print and printing, and to study the process from the woodblock materials and ink, paper, plate making to printing on the technical aspect.
      The printing techniques and the woodblock print being accomplished by manual work which have been developed based on the modern scientific development have very similar points on the materials or technical aspect, and it, is considered that taking this opportunity, it may be helpful to understand the materials and techniques of the woodblock print and printing, and to re-establish the relations between them, and by applying the materials and techniques of highly developed. printing to the woodblock print, the limitation in the woodblock work can be overcome.
