다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

American furniture artist Wendell Castle broke traditional ideas in the field of furniture design until he died of leukemia in January 2018. As an artist and educator, he made many achievements in furniture history. Since the late 1950s, he has led the American art furniture movement and changed the perception and role of furniture, and his work has inspired artists, craftsmen and designers in many genres. He trained for second-generation furniture artists at the Rochester Institute of Technology and Wendell Castle School. He has also been constantly studied and experimented in Scottsville Studio and his furniture company, Wendell Castle Collection. In Korea, art furniture was introduced in the early of 1990s and gradually became recognized by the public. Since the 2000s many art furniture makers are working here in Korea. Lately, various researches on natural wood treatment as furniture materials have been published. At this point, the analysis of Wendell Castle’s work is judged to have important values and meanings. Therefore, this study analyzes the artwork of Wendell Castle, which led the American art furniture movement in the boundary of art and design for the past 60 years.
