      This study has been conducted to know what the patients needed and expected in the quality nursing care during their hospital stay. We did the survey for the patients who discharged from the one of the university hospital in Seoul area by telephone interview when they discharged from the hospital. We expected that this study would supply the basic data for the establishment of better nursing care program and its surveillence.
      We surveyed 40 patients who discharged in Aug. 1998 and made reservation for next visit in two weeks.
      Interviewers asked the patients five open type preliminary questions, recorded the responses and did the content analysis with frequencies and percents of attributes of quality nursing care. We explored the attributes of quality nursing care and meaning of quality nursing care that the patients perceived and would expected.
      The results were as follows;
      1) The patient's responses included good, appreciation, thanksfullness, kindness, happiness, surprise, unexpectedness, platitude, nevermind, abruptness, trust, and hope.
      2) The attributes of quality nursing care that patients perceived were categorized into 14 attributes. The highest response rate among the attributes was kindness (32.5%), and the next high responese rates were ranked in order consideration (27.5%), expert injection skill (25.0%), information offer (20.0%), intimate feeling (17.5%), prompt care (15.0%), deal problem quick (15.0%), amiable (12.5%), speaking warmly (7.5%), do one's best (7.5 %), frequent visit (7.5%), listening carefully (7.5%), getting ready (7.5%) and companionship (5.0%). The high ranking attributes were integrated into 4 categories including kindness (37.4%), comfort (26.5%), proficiency (21.7%), and quickness (14.5%).
      3) The attributes of quality nursing care that patients needed and would expected were categorized into 16 arrtibutes. The highest response rate among the attributes were inadequate injection skill (20.0%) and crowding with visitors (20.0%) and the next high response rates were ranked in order, lack of explanation (15.0%), delayed care (12.0%), lack of professionalism (10.0%), impolite words (7.5%), shortage of nursing staff (7.5%), interrupted communication (5.0%), lack of informed consent (5.0%), noisy environment (5.0%), poor environment (5.0%), compelled treatment (2.5%), lack of in-patient care (2.5%), lack of information service (2.5%), showy praise (2.5%) and lack of capability (2.5%). The high ranking attributes were integrated into 4 categories including lack of nursing professionalism (52.0%), uncomfortable environment (24.0%), lack of capacity as a expert nurse (18.0%), and shortage of nursing staff (6.0%).
      4) This study confirmed the previous reports that quality nursing consisted of expertise, kindness, professionalism and comfort environment could let the patients to feel tranquility, proficiency, kindness and promptness in nursing care. This study showed these attributes let the patients to satisfy during hospital stay. We propose that these data would be applied to the development of clinical nursing care program which would result in better satisfaction to the patients. In future, there should be further study on the reliability of terms and statistical significance.
      On the basis of the above findings the following recommendations are made: to suggest to utilize these results for patient care in practice setting, do further study in the view of nursing staffs and test reproducibility in other subjects.
