This article examines the career of Hong Seong-won (1725-?) and the epigram ‘積翠’(green mountain) on the piane(扁額) of Myōhō-in Temple(妙法院) in Kyoto, Japan. As a member of Year of Sheep Tongsinsa Mission(癸未通信使行), he was dispatched to the shogunal court of Tokugawa Leharu in 1763. Hong’s career as a royal scribe can be found in the Journal of the Royal Secretariat(承政院日記) and the transcriptive records of “Royal Protocols” in the Kyujanggak Archives(奎章閣儀軌). For forty years, he served as a scribe for the royal court, leaving behind countless accomplishments. He was in charge of writing the woodblock texts for the royal publication and correcting the scripts and tablets written by the king. He also wrote the transcriptions of Royal Protocols of the Joseon Dynasty. He was recognized as one of the most accomplished scribes of his time and was praised by the king and his courtiers for his work. He received numerous honors and gifts from the king. On his way to Japan as an envoy of the Joseon Tongsinsa mission to Japan, he wrote several epigrams among which is the epigram ‘積翠’(green mountain) on the piane(扁額) of Myōhō-in Temple(妙法院). His calligraphy, which inherited the tradition of the royal transcriptions, was based on Seokbong Hanho(石峯 韓濩)’s calligraphic style of large characters. It is characterized by neat but varied strokes, tight texture, and impeccable overall composition. This biane contributed to the role of the Joseon Tonsinsa missions and the artistic exchanges between Korea and Japan in its own way, leaving an artistic atmosphere in the foreign land until now. The meaning of the epigram ‘積翠’ is a dignified reference to the green mountains, and it seems to refer to the surrounding landscape rather than the name of the building. We don’t know whose request it was, or how it ended up on the Myoho-in Temple. No doubt it was written by Hong Hongyuan while he was traveling through Kyoto, which was then called Western Capital.
