      This study analyzes the residential landscape of a traditional rural village as shaped by the author’s worldview, from a landscape architecture perspective, focusing on Pak Kyong-ni’s epic novel Toji. The analysis covers Parts 1–5 of the novel, spanning the period from 1897 to 1945, with particular attention to the Pyeongsa-ri in Hadong, the novel’s primary setting.
      The research method involves a close examination of textual descriptions of buildings, facilities, and vegetation that reflect the spatial and temporal characteristics of the novel. The results indicate that the landscape portrayed in Toji functions as a key indicator of the author’s perspectives on history, nature, and human life. Pyeongsa-ri is depicted as a representative traditional rural village situated according to the backed by a mountain behind and facing a river (Baesanimsu) in front, reflecting the communal structure of communal life in the modern era. Plants further serve as mediators of emotional symbolism and expressions of regional identity.
      The landscape of Pyeongsa-ri in Toji can therefore be interpreted not merely as a background setting but as a three-dimensional space embodying the lives and values of traditional rural communities. By examining literary representations of traditional landscapes, this study suggests the potential for integrating national heritage preservation with landscape architectural research within the humanities.
