Aiming at helping implement various policies and undertakings regarding the Baekdu-daegan mountain system through discovering and recognizing its cultural value, this study examined and organized the rite cultures handed down or still remaining in areas in the Baekdu-daegan region. Categorizing them into a few rituals such as rituals for mountain gods, Dangsan rituals, rituals of replacing old totem poles with new ones, rituals for rain and other modern sacrificial rituals, I looked at the fundamental concepts, subtypes and procedures of each type of rituals and presented typical examples of each type in the areas.
There are few ritual events conducted at the national level today and even in cases where they are held by the local governments or by private groups with a village as a unit, most are done in simpler forms due to the religious situation and the population decrease in rural areas. It is suggested that solutions should be sought to recognize the rite culture in forest regions as the traditional living culture, wisdom of life, and medium of community activities, instead of sticking to its religious meaning.
