      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This essay examines a hermeneutic phenomenology of the myth based on collective memories, providing a genealogy or the dialectical account of identity with the combination of a phenomenological clarification and a hermeneutic emphasis on interpretation. It begins with a probe into the historicality or preunderstanding structure of collective memory defining images of the world, which eventually leads to the formulation of individual and national identities.
Then the essay goes on to examine the modern phenomenon of identity politics capitalising on and fuelled by wounded attachment, or ‘ressentiment ’ . Myths and allegories as the product of interpretive project constructing the past, the essay concludes, complete a ‘hermeneutic circle ’ : the totalising memory of victimisation is conducive to identity formation, which in turn consolidates the ‘national glossolalia’ of chosenness and uniqueness.
