      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Since Eve in Paradise Lost has drawn scholars’ attention, John Milton’s representation of and stance toward women has been consistently discussed. This essay explores how Milton represents women throughout his early literary career, mainly focusing on the poems directly addressed to or praising women. In his Italian sonnets written around 1629, Milton actively imitates Petrarchan sonnets and presents himself as a young English lover who has difficulty in writing love poetry in the Italian language. In this sonnets, an exotic, beautiful, and possibly Italian woman who orders him to write in the Italian appears to be an element in the literary conventions of the sonnet tradition rather than the actual object of love. The poems praising women he met in 1630s such as “An Epitaph on the Marchioness of Winchester,” “Arcades,” or Latin elegies dedicated to Leonora Baroni, an Italian singer, show that Milton understands these women’s circumstances and tries to praise them in appropriate ways, praising their maternal aspects, religious virtues, or musical excellence. In these poems the women stand as important figures in their respective communities and they are acknowledged with due rewards. Milton’s 1640s English sonnets also show his literary skills were more enhanced and the women in these pieces are praised for their virtue and mostly for religious faith and acts. Their feminine qualities are not so prominent as in his earlier works, and their lives are presented as examples that both Milton and his readers can eagerly follow.
