한국 재즈음악의 발전을 위한 상설공연 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

그 동안 대중문화에 대한 연구는 수용자를 대상으로 진행한 경우가 많았다. 특히 한국 재즈음악의 생산 환경에 관한 연구는 아직 역사가 짧고 전문적인 연구가 부족하다. 분야의 특성상 현장 전문가의 연구 환경이 열악하고, 현장을 연구하기에는 이론적 연구만으로 이를 대체하기는 어렵기 때문이다.
본 연구는 지난 10년 동안 재즈음악의 상설공연을 해온 ‘재즈파크(Jazz Park)’를 중심으로 한국 재즈음악의 발전을 위한 상설공연에 관한 연구를 진행한 것이다. 이를 위해서 한국 재즈음악에 관한 이론적 고찰과 함께 현장전문가들의 심층인터뷰와 참여관찰을 통한 질적 방법으로 조사, 분석을 하였다. 그 동안 재즈음악에 관한 연구는 국내환경에 관한 연구가 부족하고, 현재 생존한 재즈1세대부터 다양한 전문가를 상대로 질적 연구를 시도한 사례는 없었다. 따라서 본 연구는 현장의 생산시스템을 조사, 분석하여 한국 재즈음악공연의 대중화와 상설공연에 관한 미래지향적인 방안을 제안하게 되었다. 문제제기는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국 재즈음악의 발전과 대중화를 위한 방안은 무엇인가? 둘째, 재즈파크의 사례를 통한 재즈음악 상설공연은 어떤 의미를 갖고 있으며, 문제점과 개선방안은 무엇인가?
연구 결과, 한국 재즈음악공연은 다음과 같은 특징과 문제점을 발견할 수 있다. 첫째, 재즈음악의 특성을 고려할 때, 공연의 기회를 넓히고 현장시스템을 개선해야 한다. 둘째, 전문 인력의 양성이나 생계 등과 관련된 환경개선을 위해서 메세나와 재즈협회의 활성화가 요구된다.
재즈파크의 역할과 의미 그리고 현장전문가들에 의한 발전방안은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 재즈파크를 통한 한국 재즈음악의 상설공연은 국내 뮤지션들의 연주기회제공의 측면에서 매우 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 그러나 공연의 질적 향상을 위한 투자와 지원이 필요하다. 둘째, 재즈빅밴드의 제작과 신인 뮤지션 발굴, 지원 사업은 재즈음악의 발전에 크게 기여하고 있다. 이러한 노력은 다른 장르와의 융합 등을 통하여 한국형 재즈음악의 발전에 기여할 것이다.
재즈음악이 해외음악이고 사뭇 난해한 음악임을 감안할 때, 대중음악으로서 널리 확산되기 힘든 환경임은 부인할 수 없다. 그러나 마니아층 외에도 대중의 관심이 늘어나는 추세를 볼 때, 공연의 활성화를 통한 한국 재즈음악의 발전을 위하여 메세나와 대중문화정책의 측면에서 보다 다양한 지원과 관심이 요구된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Research on popular culture has usually been focused on users, not on producers. In particular, studies of the environment of Korea's jazz production have only a short history, and no in-depth research exists yet. That is because the conditions of onsite research are unfavorable and theoretical research cannot replace onsite one.
Focusing on Jazz Park which has run regular jazz performances for the past ten years, this research elaborates on such performances designed to develop Korean jazz. To be more specific, I approached Korean jazz from a theoretical point of view. I also conducted qualitative analysis by asking detailed questions to onsite experts and having them participate in my research as observers. As mentioned before, research on Korea's jazz environment is still insufficient and no researcher attempted a qualitative study by inviting a great number of experts, starting from Korea's first generation of jazz artists. Under these circumstances, this research studies and analyzes the onsite production system of Korean jazz in order to come up with future-oriented suggestions regarding the popularization of Korean jazz and permanent performances. I started my study with following questions: first, what would contribute to the development and popularization of Korean jazz? Second, what is the meaningfulness of permanent jazz performances run by Jazz Park and what are their problems and solutions to them?
As a result, it turned out that Korean jazz performances have the following characteristics and problems. First, considering the nature of jazz music, more performance opportunities should be given to artists while also improving the onsite system. Second, support from businesses and the activities of jazz associations should be encouraged so as to improve the overall jazz environment encompassing the training of experts and their livelihood.
Here are the role and meaningfulness of Jazz Park as well as some suggestions for improvements to be made by onsite experts. First, permanent Korean jazz performances at Jazz Park have played a very important role of providing Korean musicians with opportunities to be on stage. Nevertheless, investment and support are still needed to enhance the quality of the performances. Second, Jazz Park has greatly contributed to the development of Korean jazz by creating Jazz Park Big Band and by finding and supporting new musicians. Such efforts will also lead to the development of Korea's own jazz music by blending jazz and other genres.
Considering the fact that jazz originated in a foreign country and that it is rather a difficult genre, it would be undeniable that it is not easy to popularize it in Korea. However, it is also true that not only big jazz fans but also the general public is increasingly interested in jazz in Korea. Therefore, more support and attention are needed to further develop Korean jazz by revitalizing jazz performances. In particular, support from businesses and policies on popular culture should be strengthened.
