      This study is focused on community participation community design as revitalization(regeneration) methods of distressed commercial areas, especially Commercial Area of Changwon Test-Bed.

      Physical regeneration such as redevelopment or reconstruction couldn’t fix for the problem of declining urban, problem which have festered for years. Also, several attempts to correct the problem met with failure. For this reason, latterly and very recently, the regeneration strategies for the Distressed Communities have resurfaced. In these circumstances, there is a consideration for community as real users. And the need for community participation in community design began to appear.
      By meeting the needs of the times, Community Design that people participate was introduced to design the community, especially residential area. But, commercial area never deviated from redevelopment and reconstruction projects on the run-down areas. There were lack of understanding about the community design through community participation. Also, no new programs for the realization were discussed.
      So, in this study, through case study devised programs and techniques which can be applied to the commercial alley as community design processes. The design processes applied directly to the 250 years alley in Changwon test-bed commercial areas. (Target area of this study is 250 years alley in the commercial area of Changwon test-bed and objects of this research are merchant to participate in 250 years alley design class.)
      During the entire design class, we observed the process of changes in their attitude through observation survey and analyzed effect and application possibility of community design through question investigation and depths interview.
      The results of the study are as follows:
      First, The effect of community design was clearly evident in the change of attitude. As the class progressed, participation changed from an expectant and passive attitude to positive and active attitude. The community design process can promote participation and a change of mind.
      Second, in the process of community design having a common purpose, they increased feelings of intimacy and shared a sense of belonging. By forming a new relationship, they made more personal connections. In other words, it can improve social connectedness through formation of relationships.
      Third, concerns about the “community participation” and the “community design”, coupled with realizing the importance of the participation in regeneration projects, stimulated interest in the region.
      Community design is simply not series of design process that community planned their area, but process to change or convert the community. In this process, they have grown very attached to community and increased interest in their community. After all, it creates a community.
      The most important thing for community design is participation. That is, the ultimate goal is “community design” engage and stretch community, encouraging them to make community for themselves and maintain.
