고등학교에서의 영문학 수업의 실제 적용 = Teaching English through literature in high school

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis aims at studying practical methods in high school English class. Now, the English texts used in high school do not give students fun, interest, and satisfaction. It deals with current events and many separated topics. It cannot give students continuous interest and fun. Students have difficulty in being moved by and interested in English.Literature is a meaningful and authentic material. It is the work of imagination and the whole reflection of its own culture. Language learning is not just training or memorizing useful expressions. It is also a creative process and means to understand each other''s opinion and express one''s feeling. Students can be encouraged to understand culture at large on the basis of understanding literature and motivated to study English.Most students have no chance to express their thought freely in the class. Teacher-centered and text-oriented class cannot motivate students to participate in English class. English literature class can give students the opportunities to expand their linguistic ability and motivate themselves.By analyzing one of the most representative novels written in English, Alice''s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, the teacher can introduce and activate various teaching methods such as word chart, cloze puzzle, writing, describing the pictures, story mapping, guessing, and so on. As the students take active parts in a group activity, they can discuss the given topic according to their own points of view and learn many things through correcting their errors by themselves.Teacher is a designer for the class. Through elaborate analysis and dissection, he can create ideal language class. Literature is the creative work. Students can give full play to their imagination in English literature class. It is time to introduce English literature to a curriculum of English education in high school.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 고등학교의 영어수업에서 영어학습의 가치 있는 자료인 영문학을 전혀 다루고 있지 않는 현실에서 영문학 자료를 실제로 수업에 적용함으로서 교육현장에서 사용가능한 수업 방법들을 연구하였다.고등학교 영어교육은 아직도 많은 부분들이 암기하고 반복 훈련하는 과정의 틀을 크게 벗어나지 못하고 있으며 교과서의 내용은 학생들의 언어발전을 의한 재미있고 의미 있는 자료가 아닌 시사적이고 단편적인 내용들로 분절되어 구성되어 있기 때문에 학생들에게 지속적인 흥미와 동기부여를 주고 있지 못하고 있다. 이에 대한 대안으로 영문학을 이용한 영어 수업을 제시하였다. 영문학 자료들은 인위적으로 만들어진 문장이 아니며 의미 있고 믿을 만한 자료들이고 영미문화가 자연스럽게 녹아있는 자료이다. 또한 학생들에게 무한한 상상력과 창의력을 줄 수 있는 유용한 수업자료로서 영어수업에 반드시 필요하다.교사 중심적이고 틀에 박힌 영어 수업은 더 이상 학생들에게 감동을 줄 수 없을 뿐 아니라 학습 동기를 부여할 수 없다. 학생 중심적이고 스스로 동기를 부여받으며 영어학습을 효과적으로 하기 위해서는 흥미 있고 의미 있는 영어 자료를 학습할 필요가 있으며 학생의 어휘 수준과 정서 수준에 맞는 영문학 자료에 학생들이 지속적으로 노출 되어야 할 것이다.고등학교의 영어수업에서 실제로 이상한 나라의 엘리스(Alice''s Adventures in Wonderland) 작품을 수업에 적용해 보았다. 각 장(chapter)을 분석하여 음성자료와 함께 구성하여 학생들이 조(group) 별 활동을 통해 읽고, 쓰고, 듣고, 말할 수 있는 다양한 수업방법들을 소개하였다. 그리고 설문조사를 통해 많은 학생들이 영문학에 흥미와 관심을 갖고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 현재 고등학교 교과과정에 편성되어 있는 창의적 재량시간이나 도서관 수업과 연계된 영문학 수업을 진행하는 것도 학교 현장에서 가능할 것이다.문학의 생명은 상상력이며 언어학습에 필수적인 이 상상력은 문학을 통해서 얻어질 수 있을 것이다. 교사는 영문학 작품을 철저히 분석하고 해체하여 수업에 알맞은 형태의 자료로 디자인하여서 학생들의 언어적 상상력과 잠재력을 이끌어 낼 수 있도록 노력해야 할 것이며 고등학교 영어교과 과정에서도 영문학 과정의 도입을 심도 있게 연구해야 할 때이다.
