This paper which is exploratory in nature focuses on the interlanguage pragmatic strategies used by Japanese and Korean learners of English. Data was collected from the CCDL Project which was jointly conducted by Korean and Japanese University students during the period of April 1999 to December 1999. The assumption throughout this paper is that Japanese and Korean learners of English share many similarities but that there are some crucial differences in terms of their pragmatic strategies. Observation, analysis, and discussion of the student data lead to the tentative conclusion that interspeaker understanding and sensitivity to pragmatic variables of the target language appear to be essential in producing natural and native speaker like speech. That is, misunderstanding becomes evident when the interlocutors heavily depend on the pragmatic variables of their own native languages.
