Modern society is often referred to as the era of multiculture. Such post-modernistic tendencies is displayed in Korea through two forms of consciousness, one is a consciousness based on globalization while the other is towards a Korean subjectivity and identity. In addition, as personal signs have become varied as cultural lifestyles have improved as we enter modern society, which in turn, has expanded the desires for products with individualism rather generalized or common products.
This study introduces patterns applying the chogakpo pattern of wrapping cloth, one of our past lifestyle accessories. By producing works through
use of ceramic pigments, transfer paper, and pigments, this study will utilize the values of our traditional chogakpo patterns as ceramic decoration design.
As for the research methodology, documentary studies were analyzed and through the chogakpo, the formative side distribution were applied. The designed patterns were of a method possible for utilization by middle school students or beginners and pigment were used to investigate of various techniques of pigment expression by use of the silkscreen technique, color-paper transfer paper, or mixing dirt with paints.
In order to express the image, the designed patterns, the shapes of bowls in chogakpo shape were acquired. In addition, the small bowls were designed through integrating with the chogakpo pattern and finished after a sambeol heating process.
Through this study, we are able to rediscover the beauties of our traditions through the chogakpo, a lifestyle accessories which carries the love and care of our ancestors. In addition, through a reanalysis, we are able to newly recognize its artistic value and investigate on the aesthetic aspects of Korea's chogakpo. In such respects, we are able to find significance and serve as a basis for continued research and studies in our traditional arts. I hope that this study can create added understanding and diffusion of our traditional arts in the future and serve as an opportunity which integrates our traditional arts with modern perspectives.
