구름을 소재로 한 칠예 작품 연구

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The cloud that has long been used as a symbol of long life and fortune has been representing the soul of Korean people in various ways. Varying in shapes, sizes, and colors, it represents all sorts of forms and figures being cast over the mountains or the moon. That has inspired our desire to be free from earthy shackles. We have discovered beauty from the transfiguring clouds and expressed them in various forms.

Depending on its altitude and shape, the cloud is classified into 10 types such as cirri, altocumuli, strati, and cumuli etc. However Korean people have put a significant meaning into each type of clouds, and created indigenous art forms of their own. The shapes of the cloud symbolizes a series of meanings such as the heaven, an eternal life, the advancement of the social status, fortune, and totems which have been developed into the arts.

I have looked into the abstract shapes of the cloud and tried to embodied them in lacquer works to express the mentality of modern people and their sub-consciousness. I have made eight lacquer works with various shapes of the cloud and their color contrast. I have figure the heaven which has been the major cloud symbol in Korea and sculptured the hope for the prosperity. I used repeating constructions and cloud figures to express the cloud that implies the time movement of the past, the present, and the future as it can be flown away.

The natural dyes collected from the nature are semi-permanent and the best material in expressing human mentality. Using a mixture of painting techniques, I tried to catch the flow of human mind in the geometric shapes of Gi, Hap, and Jeopsi. As the dictionary definition of Gi and Hap is pots or pans, in my works, they have been used as a conceptual container that encloses the ideology of humans. Hyeopjeotaltaegeonchil technique has been applied to maximize the advantages of color lacquering the different shapes of Gi, Hap, and Jeopsi. For extended stability, Moksimjeopichil techniques has been applied.
The pattern is modified and reconstructed from the forms of the cloud so that it can bring a sense of the nature to the modern people, express the traditional symbols such as the heaven, an eternal life, the advancement of the social status, fortune, and totems, and denotes the repeating circulation of human mentality.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

유구한 세월과 함께 늘 가까이 하며 예로부터 장수와 행운을 상징했던 구름은 다양한 경로로 한국적 심성을 잘 나타내 주었다. 구름은 모양과 크기, 색이 일정하지 않으며 산이나 달에 걸쳐져 하늘의 천태만상(千態萬象)한 모습을 담아내 주었다. 그러한 모습은 현실을 벗어나고자 하는 인간의 심성에 무엇보다 강한 매력을 주어, 변화무쌍한 구름 속에서 미를 발견하였고 조형 의지와 미의식 빌어서 다양한 형상으로 표현되어 왔다.
구름은 형성되는 높낮이에 따라 권운, 고적운, 층운, 적운 등 10가지로 분류된다. 하지만 우리 민족은 변화무쌍한 모습 하나 하나에 의미를 부여하여, 민족 고유의 문양화를 완성시켰다. 구름문양은 천계, 불로영생, 신분상승, 주술과 기복 사상 등 다양한 상징성을 띄게 되었으며, 이는 조각과 문학 등 창작 예술의 형태로 발전되었다.
이에 면면히 흐르는 구름이 표방하는 형이상학적 세계를 고찰하여 이를 현대인의 정신 세계에 투영시켜 내면적 의식의 흐름으로 표현된 칠예 작품으로 표현해 내고자 하였다. 다양한 형태의 구름과 적절한 채색의 대비를 통해 완성된 8종의 칠예 작품으로 형상화 하였다. 한국 구름 문양의 대표적인 상징인 ‘천계’를 표현하였으며, 풍요로움에 대한 소망을 조각해 보았다. 구름이라는 대상물은 ‘흘러감’으로 인하여 과거와 현재와 미래에 대한 인식의 흐름을 내재하고 있다고 판단된 바, 표현 방법으로 겹쳐진 구도와 연속적인 구름의 형상을 배치하였다.
자연에서 채취한 칠(漆)은 그 어떤 재료보다 우리의 정신 세계를 효과적으로 표현할 수 있는 반영구적 표현 재료이다. 따라서 칠의 무한한 표현 방법을 바탕으로 다양한 의식의 흐름을 ‘기(器)’와 ‘합(盒)’, ‘접시‘ 등의 함축적 형태로 표현해 보고자 했다. ‘기’와 ‘합’은 사전적 의미에서 ‘그릇’, ‘용기’를 뜻하지만 본 작품에서는 인간의 이상(理想)을 담기 위한 정신적 표현 방식으로써 그 의미를 확대해 보았다. 흐름을 상징하는 ‘기’, ‘합’, 접시‘의 다양한 형태들을 칠의 장점이 극대화될 수 있는 협저탈태건칠(夾紵脫胎乾漆)기법을 주로 사용하였다. 안정성을 위하여 목심저피칠(木心佇被漆) 기법을 보조로 사용하였다. 무늬는 전통길상무늬인 구름을 소재로 변형, 재구성하여 현대인들에게 자연을 느낄 수 있도록 하였으며, 천계, 불로영생, 신분상승, 주술 등 전통적 상징과 더불어 의식의 순환이라는 새로운 상징성을 부여하고자 했다.
