<AbsText> BOOKS must, of course, have titles, and their titles must, equally of course, be, if possible, alliterative. "The Earl" and "The Doctor" long ago wrote, under a far more appropriate heading, the book on the Pacific paradise-- that is, the book of which this one is a reflex; and, after the pleasant things which the present author (is his canonised Scots name also a pseudonym?) has to say of his treatment by the natives and of their lotos-eating islands, we could have wished that he had buried the hatchet and forgotten the ugly stories of man-eaters who have long ceased to crave after "long pig," and for whose doings he has, of course, nothing but tradition to rely upon. </AbsText>
