In current paper, doctors' delivery strategies according to disease conditions were examined using Japanese and Korean medical dramas. The purpose of this study is to clarify the tangible characteristics of the strategies for delivering disease conditions in Japan and Korea. The delivery strategies of the doctors were largely divided as expert types, helper types, and counselor types. For the optimistic use of information delivery strategies, the characteristic of the expert strategy was using ‘fact delivery and confirmation' in Japan and ‘direction setting' in Korea. For the helper type, Japan's ‘attention request’ and Korea's ‘use of auditory data’ were prominent. For the counselor type, the ‘relief’ strategy was used a lot in both countries.
For the strategy used for conveying pessimistic information, ‘fact delivery and confirmation’ was the most used for the expert type, followed by ‘medical speculation’. For the helper type, ‘speak in other words’ was used a lot in both countries. For the counselor type, the use of ‘relief’ in Japan and ‘apology and restoration’ in Korea was noticeable. Using the above strategy, it was possible to know the use of a strategy in a neutral position in Japan and the strategy that approaches the patient's emotions while Korea is authoritative. We hope that this study will be helpful in understanding the influence of language and culture on medical scenes.
