This study examines the religious and social functions of weapons in the ancient Near East, arguing that weapons were understood not merely as instruments of war but as sacred objects embodying divine power and social authority. Ancient Near Eastern societies viewed weapons through an animistic and theological lens, attributing supernatural agency to them and employing them as symbols of divine legitimacy and royal authority. The ideological foundation of this tradition is rooted in the Chaoskampf motif, in which storm gods establish cosmic order by defeating chaotic forces with sacred weapons.
Drawing on textual and archaeological evidence from Mari, Neo-Assyria, and ancient Israel, this study demonstrates how divine weapons functioned within political, judicial, and cultic contexts. In Mari, divine weapons legitimized kingship, reinforced diplomatic authority, and served as judicial witnesses in legal disputes, oath ceremonies, and taxation practices. In the Neo-Assyrian Empire, the “Weapon of Aššur” operated as an ideological instrument that visualized imperial sovereignty and enforced loyalty oaths throughout conquered territories. In ancient Israel and Judah, the broader Near Eastern weapon theology was reinterpreted within a Yahwistic framework, where divine weapons symbolized YHWH’s cosmic kingship and salvific power rather than autonomous military might.
The study concludes that weapons in the ancient Near East functioned simultaneously as tools of violence and mechanisms for maintaining social order, justice, and religious legitimacy. Their sacralization provided an ancient form of regulating violence by embedding warfare within a theological and moral framework.
This tradition ultimately contributed to later biblical visions of peace, exemplified in the prophetic ideal of transforming swords into plowshares.
