As wind power plants continue their ever increasing penetration in the power system, it is matter of time when the wind power production will be comparable to or even larger than the conventional power generation. Currently, several large scale offshore wind farm projects have been undergone in many places in the world. Up to now, the AC transmission system has been well accepted for the integration of all offshore wind farms to the Grid; there has been as yet no Voltage Source Converter (VSC) based-transmission system applied for offshore wind farms. In this paper, relevant aspects relating to the large-scale development of offshore wind power will be discussed. An overview of the transmission solutions to associate offshore wind farms to the Grid will be also surveyed. An offshore wind farm connected to the VSC-High Voltage Direct Current (VSC-HVDC) transmission system will be proposed. Operation modes of the proposed system with a specific control strategy will be modeled; faults in each system will be examined separately along with results exposed. All simulations in this paper will be carried out in PSCAD/EMTDC environment.
