It was in 1930 that folk-dance was first introduced in to Korean society. The dance was tought to some Koreans by Y.W.C.A. and not spread commonly over Korea until the latter half of 1950s. Since the dance was added to the school curriculum, it has come to be considerably popular with the public as well as students.
It is necessary for us to examine the educational effect and value of the folk-dance. The folk-dance originated in the farming folk's demand to be free from their economic oppression and hard labour early in the Middle Ages, but it was unsociably enjoyed by a few limited people for their recreation.
Most of folk-dances have disappeared in the 20th century, while some ones preserved as the materials for folklore by desendants are performed only on a few special occasions.
Such European folk-dance is not believed to be worth the attainment of our educational end If it is worth while, even the dances of manbou and rumba could also bring about the attainment of educational end.
